Dr Budge is a General Surgeon with extensive experience in abdominal surgery, using both open and laparoscopic techniques. Joel has been associated with the Sydney Hernia Clinic since 1999, when as a senior medical student he audited the Clinic’s work as part of a research project, in the spirit of the Clinic’s Total Quality Management (Kaizen) principles.
Dr Budge graduated from the University of New South Wales, with Honours, in 2000. His early career was spent in Western Sydney and in various parts of western New South Wales. He has worked in both pediatrics and adult surgical settings, and found an early niche in the developing specialty of laparoscopic colorectal surgery.
Dr Budge also obtained extensive experience of acute general surgical practice at Nepean Hospital. He undertook research in the nature of common bile duct stones, before completing his Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Fellowship examinations in 2011.
Opportunities to further develop his skills in Colorectal Surgery presented themselves in Canberra, Liverpool and Wollongong Hospitals in 2012-2014, where Joel worked with a wide variety of experienced specialists bringing a wealth of collective experience. Joel continued at Wollongong in 2015 as a Fellow in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, giving him a unique, holistic appreciation of and experience in modern abdominal surgery. He has also held a number of locum Consultant Surgeon roles in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.
Dr Budge brings a wide and varied experience to SIOS and the Sydney Hernia Clinic, offering services including, but not limited to, endoscopy, cholecystectomy, small bowel and colorectal surgery, open and laparoscopic hernia repairs, including services to patients suffering from obesity.
Dr Budge’s emphasis is on providing work of exceptional quality in the setting of warm, clear, open and accessible communication.
